My thanks to William Milligan for bringing this to my attention. Four years ago he began taking the nutritional supplements known as glyconutrients which he believes are responsible for a marked improvement in his health. He goes on to relate that this featured in the MIT magazine's 2003 innovation issue and has been shown to improve the health of people with arthritis, cancer, diabetes and lupus as well as multiple sclerosis.
I decided I should do a little web research and there certainly appears to be plenty of information on this subject. According to the newly emerging technology glycobiology (the study of sugars), it could be glyconutrients (simple sugars) rather than proteins as has been previously argued in the science community, that are responsible for cellular communication and cellular recognition.
Glyconutrients address the workings of the brain and nervous system, from memory to sleep, and anxiety to depression. In addition, they have a role in helping the body handle cholesterol and fats by lowering triglycerides and low-density lipoproteons while, at the same time, raising the good cholesterol. Oatmeal has long been considered beneficial in reducing cholesterol and this is because it is the sugars (beta-glucans) in the oatmeal that are responsible.
I also read recently, I can't remember where, that one of the benefits of glyconutrients is that they can enable the body to produce it's own interferon, which is, allegedly, much better than chemically produced versions like beta interferon used commonly to treat MS.
Glyco means "sweet" and, therefore, used when describing a sugar or carbohydrate molecule. "Sugar", "Carbohydrate" and "Saccharide" are all used interchangeably.
Glycoforms are large sugar molecules that combine with proteins and/or fats to cover the surface of all cells. These are known as "glycoproteins" or "glycolipids".
Glycoproteins are molecules made of sugars and proteins. They are found coating the surface of every cell in the human body that contains a nucleus.
Glycolipids are molecules made of sugars and fats. "Lipid" and "Fat" are often used interchangeably.
Glyconutrients are the foods and nutritional supplements that provide saccharides along with other glycoforms essential to the body, but which are scarce in most diets.
I have been looking for an online supplier for glyconutrients and found that they cannot be sold directly online. They are available in the UK from Natural Way Health but you must phone them to place an order. If you visit their site click on the "Products" menu to find the Glyconutrients entry. I am currently working with them to see if we can devise an easier way to do this. If you should call them, please mention this site as your introduction to Glyconutrients from Natural Way Health.
