Portofino Apartments, Santa Ponsa
Self Catering Apartments in Santa Ponsa, Mallorca
Having just returned from Santa Ponsa amidst the chaos of the collapse of Futura Airlines and Scottish-based Seguro Holidays, I felt compelled to write a few words about these largely unknown apartments.
Sadly I have no pictures of the outside of the apartments as my camera was stolen before our return. My wife and I have holidayed here for the last eight years and it has always been enjoyable.
Portofino comprises sixty one bedroom apartments, each with lounge, kitchen, bathroom and balcony. There are two swimming pools available for the use of apartment clients and there is a poolside bar between them. There is a lift to the apartments and to the pool making it suitable for older patrons and the disabled (me).
These apartments have been available exclusively through Seguro Holidays flying out of Prestwick in Scotland. This has, of course, now changed and the owner of the apartments Seņor Colom is now looking for a new partner to rent these wonderful apartments.
Santa Ponsa in Mallorca, or Majorca if you prefer, is an amazing place and Portofino is located amongst many restaurants and bars. The night clubs are on the other side of town so Portofino is quiet except in September when the Festival is on. The festival boasts some magnificent fireworks and live music on the beach. The musin does go on rather late on the Saturday night.
Church at the Spanish Square
The beach is large and clean and the streets are kept absolutely immaculate. There are cafe bars and restaurants all round Santa Ponsa and the locals are helpful and friendly. Most speak English, but the police don't, so try not to get into trouble.
Another location worthy of mention is the Spanish Square with live open-air cabaret every night Some is run-of-the-mill tribute acts but others are well worth the visit. This is round the beach from Portofino and right up the hill. It is a stout walk, but taxis are plentiful from the other side of the roundabout from the main bus stance.
I, for one, will be very disappointed if the |Portofino apartments are not available next year. If I was more able-bodied and had the cash to finance it, I would do it myself. I'm sure there are many successful travel companies who will jump at the chance o0f getting these apartments on their books.
I intend to stay in touch with Portofino so that I can bring the latest updates to you here. Watch this space!
14 Oct 2008: I have just spoken with Barrhead Travel who were rumoured to be the most likely company to take over the Portofino Apartments. It is most unlikely that they will, as they are a travel agent and not a holiday tour company. They have promised to keep me informed if they find out who is dealing with it.
This may seem to be a most unlikely section of this web site to include this page and while Portofino is not a Greatest Ever Weapon it is, in my opinion, one of the Greatest Ever holiday locations I have come across.
EXCITING NEWS: I have just received an email from Sue Norton who was the resort manager with Seguro for 10 years. She is now working with Seņor Colom to allow direct booking of the Portofino Apartments. They are setting up a Web Site soon and will be advertising in the Scottish press
Click here Portofino & Sorrento Apartments to visit their site. It is in Spanish, but as a regular visitor, I'm sure you are fluent.
